Here's an article I wanted to share with you guys. I was intrigued by this especailly as Planned Parenthood was one of the more controversial things left unfunded by the budget revamp.
Would you ever consider the drastic measures that some of these folks are taking, like buying your pills on craigslist? To me that is very sketchy. I might use ebay but not craiglist or maybe buy it in Canada. Whatever happens I would never not use a method of birth control. I think leaving things to chance is extremely costly both in potential consequences and mental health i.e. worry and anxiety.
What do you think of the discussion of where the cost falls in a relationship? If you were long term with someone would that be something you would split the cost of? I was just floored by how much condoms cost in the city. They said it was about $2 each. Wow.
Doesn't this article drive home the fact that we are lucky to be college students with access to free condoms and lube and other contraceptives like female condoms from the health center.
And you are all aware of that right? You can just walk in any time the clinic is open and grab a couple. They are right next to the non aspirins and the cough drops. :)
Please leave some thoughts.

I wish the Republicans who held out on making a budget deal would read these types of articles and look at what women are resorting to outside of clinics like Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood provides safe contraception methods as well as proper education about contraception. When young women start resorting to Craigslist or Ebay, a whole world of dangerous possibilities is opened up. If Planned Parenthood lost its funding, I wonder how many women would get their birth control from these sorts of (on my opinion) unreliable sources/vendors. Scary.
ReplyDeleteI liked the part about Jake. D from NYC buying $20-$30 in Condoms per month.
ReplyDeleteWow, I am shocked that pills can be purchased over Craigslist...seems like it should be illegal.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious to know if there is any active attempt at stopping this, because, as the article states, medicine can be expired, tampered with, etc.
On a separate note, I am kind of annoyed at how this article is treating birth control as an irrefutable right. Don't get me wrong, I am all in favor of contraception. At the same time though, this article treats sex as a given. And, moreover, I think it understates alternative contraceptions.
As a famous bumper sticker once said "condoms are easier to change than diapers".
ReplyDeleteThe article analysis was fine but beyond that, some things are better left unsaid.
I agree with your last statement Chris.
ReplyDeleteIn another note, I think Planned Parenthood should continue receiving money. Many of politicians who oppose the funding state that the majority of the money goes towards providing abortions, but this simply is not true. Thousands of women use Planned Parenthood for other womens health issues, plenty of which do not include abortion.
Dane, you do bring up a good point. Sex is not a given. However, women should have the option to purchase birth control that will not cost them hundreds of dollars a year.
I think this shows that lawmakers are ignorant when it comes to people's life choices. If people want condoms or pills, they will find a way to get it. Even if it means buying them in a less than secure manner. Passing a law isnt going to stop people from drinking, having sex, or abortions for that matter. Regardless of your personal beliefs, it has been shown over time. Underage drinking, teenage sex, etc. still exist.
