Interesting set of graphs. I think they illustrate an important point, new technology and advancement is what spurs growth. Capitalism provides the motivation needed for people to innovate. In a restrictive system like Communism or a monarchy, there is nothing for individuals to gain. This also hints to me that green technology may be the pathway to long term future growth.
Gapminder is such a great site the way it allows you to compare seemingly disparate data sets. I think this is the right way to go with our statistics. No single indicator can be trusted to teach us much about the world in which we live. I strongly suggest playing around with the graphs a little yourself. Very enlightening.
I think Noah nails it - technology improvements are the only 'real' way to create growth. Think about it - all this growth we had over the past decade wasn't real. If we are to return to growth, I agree that tech could be the driver, particularly green tech.
